I wanted to share a personal story I have about a man I know who is deaf and plays softball. This Summer and last Summer I was on an MSCR adult softball team and on one of the teams that we played numerous times and had a couple cookouts with, there was a man who was deaf. Now when we first started playing them I had no idea that he was deaf, and there was not anything that would make me think he was. But then there was a time when he was on second and someone hit a fly ball to the outfield, he thought there were two outs so he just ran and ran but there was only one out. Everyone kept yelling at him that he needed to get back but he was not paying attention and was out. When that first happened, I thought, "wow this guy really sucks at softball." Then my teammate told me that he was deaf so he could not hear anything his teammates were saying. That was really surprising to me because I never really thought about someone who is deaf playing softball in this league, but then I started watching closer and saw how great his teammates were. He could read lips and vocalize his language so that's how he communicated and his teammates made sure they faced him when talking. I just really enjoy that because his teammates try their best to help him on the field, he is also a really good softball player so he does not really need much help out there.
