It’s one thing to imagine living without one of our senses, whether that be inability to taste the chocolate ice cream, smell the fresh cut grass, be without our sight and not being able to see the ocean waves or sunset, or without our hearing where we couldn’t experience music or verbal conversation. For many who have one sense impaired or lost, the other senses are in a sense, stronger, or used to compensate for the loss of the other sense. For those who are deaf or hearing impaired, they rely on their sense of sight to see their own hands and others as they communicate with sign language or read lips to understand what people are saying to them. But science has come a long way for people with hearing and other impairments. One of the things that have been noted to be “a miracle” to some who don’t benefit from hearing aids is known as the Cochlear Implant. This Cochlear Implant, which is a small electronic device that consists of two parts; one is external outside the ear, and the other is surgically implanted under the skin. While the implant won’t restore hearing, it gives individuals with severe hearing loss the ability to communicate and understand speech.
