This weeks topic of visual and hearing impairments really helped me gain an intensive understanding of both topics and how individuals with varying severities of both impairments are affected. In regards to the hearing impairments section, I never realized that there were controversies intertwined in the cochlear implant technology.
While I do understand that an individual with a disability does not want to be viewed as something that needs to be fixed, I still would think that if someone who was deaf for their whole life had the opportunity to hear, they would take the opportunity.
While I was researching the topic and completing the lectures, I was watching YouTube videos to help me understand the technology involved in cochlear implants. I found one specific video of an infant born deaf to hearing parents. They gave him a cochlear implant and the reaction in the video is amazing. Maybe it would be enough to sway some people to have more positive views on the technology? I know it had that impact on me.
