After learning about the hearing impairment, I want to talk about a special experience that are related with the education of people who has hearing impairment. My grandmother, who was good in hearing in early childhood and teens years. However, when she grew up and start to teach physics in high school, she became unable to hear because of the mixed reasons of broken drum that is mechanical and the malfunction of middle ear. When I was young, I can still shouted in her ear so that she can hear me. But since I enter the middle school, she became completely deaf. She lives in China. When she knows that I will go to study in the U.S., she told me to teach her speak english so that one day she will come visit me when i am at school. I have tried to teach her speak english. A major way of teaching her speaking english I used is to mimic the pronunciation of the word in chinese speaking. Since she did know how to speak chinese, she can handle most of the words. However, some pronunciation in english that cannot be translated in to chinese is a problem to her. She try to find the picture how the throat vibrated and how the tone are place in the mouth to speak the sound. It is very difficult. but she did make it through and now she can speak some basic english. I feel really difficult when teaching her so that I thought it is much harder to teach people who was born with hearing impairment.
